In 1133, King Louis VI purchased the Church of Saint Peter of Montmartre in order to establish the Abbey and rebuild the Merovingian church.〔(''The Abbey of the Abbesses'' ) (France Monthly, Issue 1, 2004)〕 The rebuilt church was consecrated by Pope Eugenius III in 1147, in a splendid royal ceremony where Bernard of Clairvaux and Peter, Abbot of Cluny acted as acolytes.〔Bailey K. Young, "Archaeology in an Urban Setting: Excavations at Saint-Pierre-de-Montmartre, Paris, 1975-1977", Journal of Field Archaeology 5.3 (Autumn 1978)〕 The abbey itself was destroyed during the French Revolution though the adjoining church itself survived.
